10 Best Bedtime Stories

Simple Retellings, Discussion Questions, and Prayer Prompts to Help Kids Drift Off with Hope

Why Bible Stories at Bedtime Still Matter

Bedtime stories do more than help little eyes close, they shape little hearts.

Sharing Bible Stories:

  • Introduces children to God’s big love in simple terms

  • Builds vocabulary around faith, hope and character

  • Creates cozy, predictable routine that ends the day on a positive note

  • Opens the door for prayer, questions, and family connection

Ready to pick the perfect story? Here are our top 10 favorites, along with tips for reading and talking about them.

1. Creation (Genesis 1-2)

The imagery of light, sky, animals, and people helps kids see God as a powerful artist.

Tip: Use a flashlight for “Let there be light!” and ask, “What’s your favorite thing God made today?”

2. Noah’s Ark (Genesis 6-9)

Pairs adventure (animals two-by-two) with God’s promise (rainbow).

Tip: Line up stuffed animals on the bed as “ark passengers” and talk about promises God keeps.

3. David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

Teaches courage and trust, that even small people can do big things with God.

Tip: Let your child choose a “stone” (soft toy) to “protect” them, then pray for boldness.

4. Daniel in the Lions’ Den (Daniel 6)

Show’s God’s faithful protection when we do what’s right.

Tip: Ask, “What would you pray for if you were in a scary place?” and model trusting God out loud.

5. Baby Moses (Exodus 2)

The story about a little baby, a big river, and a brave sister. Kids connect to the idea that God watches over them.

Tip: Use a small bowl of water to “float” a toy baby and talk about how God cares for our “little” things.

6. Jesus Blesses the Children (Mark 10:13-16)

Reminds kids that Jesus loves them, welcomes them close, and values them.

Tip: After reading, whisper a “Jesus loves you” prayer over your child.

7. The Good Shepherd (John 10)

Gentle language about a shepherd who knows each sheep’s name.

Tip: Give your child a stuffed sheep and pray the Lord’s Prayer together, imagining you’re in the sheepfold.

8. Jonah and the Big Fish (Jonah 1–2)

Adventure + second chances. Kids love the drama and learn that God rescues us when we run away.

Tip: Make “fish” sounds or hand motions when you get to the big fish scene to keep them engaged.

9. The Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3–7)

Simple story of a shepherd who leaves ninety-nine sheep to find one – perfect for small attention spans.

Tip: Before reading, hide a small toy and let your child “find” it as you tell the Story.

10. The Christmas Story (Luke 2)

Nativity scenes, angels, and baby Jesus – winter wonder meets true wonder.

Tip: Add a battery-powered tea light for “shining star” effect and pray a simple “Thank You, God” prayer.

Tips for a Great Bedtime Bible Reading Routine

  • Pick 1-2 short stories instead of trying to cover too much.

  • Keep illustrations simple – colorful board books or apps work great.

  • Ask one open-ended question (“What part did you like best?”)

  • Close with a short prayer (“Thank You, God, for loving us…amen”)

  • Be flexible – some nights are for snuggles, others for quick stories.
